Biography

Dr. James Markmann is the chief of the Division of Transplant Surgery and director of Clinical Operations at the Transplant Center at Massachusetts General Hospital, and the Claude Welch Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School. His clinical activity is in liver, kidney, pancreas and isolated pancreatic islet transplantation. His research focus is on making more organs available for transplantation and developing approaches to perform transplants without the need for immunosuppression. He has published more than 300 scientific papers has held continuous NIH R01 funding for over 15 years. Dr. Markmann is active in numerous societies, editorial boards and organizations and is currently President elect for the International Pancreas and Islet Transplant Association. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine.
